The political atmosphere in Assam intensified as Congress leader Rashid Alvi questioned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over serious allegations involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife. Sarma had earlier suggested a link between Elizabeth Gogoi, a British national and wife of Gaurav Gogoi, and Ali Sheikh, a Pakistani national allegedly engaged in anti-India activities. The Assam Cabinet has already directed the state DGP to register a case against Sheikh and investigate his conduct and suspected "anti-India agenda."
Responding to the CM's claims, Rashid Alvi asked for clarity on the origin of the information and the evidence supporting the accusations. Speaking to ANI, Alvi said, "I don't know which Pakistani national's name he is taking, but first of all, the CM should tell where did this information come from? What proof does he have for this? If indeed some information came to him, then why has no FIR been lodged till now?"
He criticized the Chief Minister for making public accusations without formal legal proceedings and cautioned against lowering the standards of political discourse. “The level of politics should not stoop so low. Defaming opposition leaders and their families by speaking in the media is not appropriate. There is a limit for everything," Alvi said, expressing concern over what he called an unfortunate turn in political rhetoric.
Meanwhile, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing a press conference, welcomed Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's statement that he would consider taking legal action. Sarma encouraged Gogoi to move the court, saying it would help bring more details to light and speed up the investigation process. “If anybody is innocent, they will be declared innocent by the court of law,” the CM stated, underlining his support for a thorough judicial inquiry.
The controversy follows the Assam government's resolution citing online evidence suggesting contact between Ali Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi, raising questions about national security and political motivations behind the allegations.
