Vibrant Villages Programme Phase II: Strengthening India’s Border Communities

The Government of India has recently approved Phase II of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), an initiative designed to foster comprehensive development in strategic villages along the international land borders. With a financial allocation of ₹6,839 crore, Phase II will span across 15 states and two Union Territories, aiming for completion by 2028-29.

The primary objective of the VVP is to improve living standards, create job opportunities, and ensure secure borders. By enhancing infrastructure in border villages, including roads, power, telecom, and education facilities, the programme aims to uplift these communities. SMART classrooms and tourism circuits promoting local heritage will further contribute to the development.

VVP-II is a 100% Central Sector Scheme, entirely funded by the Union government, with a high-powered committee overseeing its implementation. The programme focuses on community engagement through fairs, festivals, and awareness camps, strengthening ties between local populations and government officials. Key interventions include promoting tourism, skill development, entrepreneurship, and establishing cooperatives for agriculture and horticulture.

The programme will cover villages within a 0-10 km radius of the international boundary, including regions in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other states. By improving infrastructure and fostering local economies, the VVP aims to stabilize the population in border areas, ensuring a vibrant and prosperous future for these strategically important communities.
