Andhra Pradesh Braces for Severe Weather: Red Alert Issued

Andhra Pradesh is on high alert as a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression, bringing heavy rainfall and potential flooding to several districts. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for six districts, including Prakasam, Nellore, and Chittoor, indicating the potential for 'heavy to extremely heavy' rainfall exceeding 20 cm in just 24 hours. This weather event, set to unfold on October 22, 2025, has prompted swift action from authorities across the state.

The weather system, currently positioned off the North Sri Lanka coast, is moving northwestwards, and its impact is already being felt. The Met Department forecasts extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places within the red alert districts, with the potential for significant flooding and related hazards. As the system moves across the Bay of Bengal, it will affect the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh, further exacerbating the weather conditions.

In anticipation of the severe weather, Andhra Pradesh's Home Minister, Vangalapudi Anitha, has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and seek shelter in safe buildings. The state's disaster management authorities are on high alert, with the police, NDRF, SDRF, and Fire Departments ready for rescue operations. Revenue Minister A Satya Prasad has instructed officials to relocate residents from low-lying areas and ensure the safety of fishermen, who are advised against venturing into the sea during this period.

With the state bracing for the impact of this weather system, the focus is on preparedness and ensuring the safety of all residents, especially those in vulnerable areas.
