Congress Urges Inclusive Strategy on U.S. Tariffs, Seeks Broader Consultations

Amid escalating trade tensions following the United States’ imposition of tariffs, the Indian National Congress has called on the central government to consult political parties and key stakeholders before determining the country’s response. Former Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma addressed a press conference on April 5, 2025, highlighting the need for a united and carefully considered approach in safeguarding India’s economic interests.

Describing the U.S. action as “unilateral” and “deeply disruptive,” Sharma criticized the move for undermining the multilateral trade framework and the World Trade Organization’s authority. He emphasized that such decisions threaten global economic stability and violate the principles of fair and rule-based trade.

Sharma urged the Modi-led government to engage with affected sectors—including agriculture, textiles, poultry, and dairy—before formulating its policy response. He proposed the formation of a national task force composed of trade experts to closely monitor developments and provide policy direction. A dedicated trade-monitoring mechanism, he said, would help assess the evolving situation and guide strategic decisions.

Stressing the importance of caution, the Congress leader warned against rushed retaliatory measures, advocating instead for a balanced approach that places national interest at the forefront. He underscored the need for India’s trade strategy to protect the services sector, a critical component of the economy.

Sharma also suggested accelerating ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the European Union and the United Kingdom. Additionally, he called for renewed trade outreach to Africa, Latin America, and the Gulf countries to diversify India’s economic partnerships.

Calling for a national consensus on trade policy, Sharma urged the government to keep the country’s broader interests in mind by ensuring political inclusiveness and transparency in decision-making.
