India’s building materials sector has seen a 30% increase in
hiring between January 2023 and January 2025, as per a report by CIEL HR. The
report, titled CIEL Works: Building Materials Sector–Talent Trends and
Insights, noted a 12% growth in hiring during the 13 months leading up to
January 2025. The pipes and steel segments have been the main drivers of this
surge, fueled by a rise in domestic consumption and global exports.
The report analysed job postings across 105 building
materials companies and 2,763 job listings on job portals. In an interview,
Vinod Chaturvedi, Chief Human Resources Officer at Shree Cement, confirmed the
trend. "We are seeing a significant demand for talent in the cement
industry. Organizations, including ours, are constantly seeking growth
opportunities to meet market demands," Chaturvedi shared. He emphasized
the need to expand sales teams nationwide to support enhanced production, with
a particular focus on cement plant operations, sales, and related areas. The
industry is also undergoing a transformation, emphasizing ESG (Environmental,
Social, and Governance) compliance, green manufacturing, productivity
improvements, and efficient supply chain management.
The report highlighted those emerging technologies such as
3D printing, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) are
reshaping manufacturing processes. This has led to a growing demand for
specialized roles in material science, sustainability, and advanced
manufacturing technologies. Companies are particularly focused on hiring
professionals with expertise in green certifications and lifecycle analysis,
signaling a shift toward more sustainable and tech-driven operations.
Leading companies that are fueling this growth include
UltraTech Cement, JSW, Tata Steel, Hindalco, Havells, Kansai Nerolac Paints,
Vedanta, Shree Cement, Asian Paints, and Berger Paints. Popular job roles in
the sector include plant managers, production managers, supply chain managers,
sales managers, environmental and sustainability specialists, design engineers,
R&D engineers, quality control experts, structural engineers, and safety
engineers.
Aditya Narayan Mishra, Managing Director & CEO of CIEL
HR Services, highlighted that India’s building materials sector is at a pivotal
stage, employing over 5.5 lakh professionals. "With growing disposable
incomes, we anticipate strong growth in construction, urbanization, and real
estate, all of which will directly benefit the building materials sector,
creating new opportunities and driving long-term progress," Mishra said.
However, the report also pointed out that women make up only
12% of the sector’s workforce. This disparity is attributed to limited access
to skill development programs for women, the absence of flexible workplace
policies, and cultural biases that discourage female participation in
traditionally male-dominated roles.
Additionally, the report revealed geographical trends in
hiring, with 81% of job postings concentrated in tier-1 cities, further
highlighting regional imbalances in employment opportunities.
