Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has pledged to raise the reservation ceiling in Telangana, a state governed by the Congress, based on findings from a recently conducted caste survey. His statement comes as part of a broader promise to reform India's reservation system and expand affirmative action policies nationwide.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi declared, “Our government conducted a caste survey in Telangana and as soon as the entire truth came out, we increased the reservation limit. Now the entire system of development is going to change there—we want to do the same across the country.”
Gandhi expressed strong opposition to the existing 50% cap on reservations in India, calling it an artificial limit. Addressing the Lok Sabha and reiterating his stance at the Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan in Patna, he challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, “If you do not demolish the fake wall of 50% on reservation, we will break it and throw it away.”
At the Sammelan, Gandhi also reflected on the philosophical roots of the Constitution, crediting the ideological contributions of figures such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Guru Nanak, and Kabir. “People say the Constitution was written in 1947, but I believe it is thousands of years old—it carries the essence of India's greatest thinkers and reformers,” he said.
Gandhi also recalled personal lessons from his lineage, highlighting a shared value of truth between Mahatma Gandhi and his great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru. “Looking at their pictures, only one thought came to my mind: that both these people loved the truth.”
Rahul Gandhi’s statements mark a significant move towards reshaping India's approach to social justice, indicating a strategic push to align reservation policies with the socio-economic realities highlighted in caste surveys.
