China Unveils “Three Gorges Antarctic Eye” to Explore Interstellar Mysteries

China has launched a significant astronomical facility—the Three Gorges Antarctic Eye—at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica, marking a major step forward in its space research ambitions. This 3.2-metre aperture radio/millimetre-wave telescope is engineered to study interstellar gas, particularly neutral hydrogen and ammonia, offering insights into the processes of star formation.

Jointly developed by China Three Gorges University and Shanghai Normal University, the telescope builds on the success of previous Antarctic telescopes like the AST3 series. With its ability to detect specific spectral lines, the Three Gorges Antarctic Eye is expected to contribute valuable data on the dynamics of the Milky Way and cosmic evolution.

Operating in Antarctica presented serious technical challenges, including sub-zero temperatures and hurricane-force winds. Researchers modified the telescope’s systems to withstand the extreme environment, laying the foundation for future submillimeter-wave telescopes in polar regions.

Antarctica’s clear, dry atmosphere makes it an ideal location for sensitive astronomical observations. With this telescope, China strengthens its position in global astronomy and commits to long-term research from one of Earth’s most remote frontiers.
