2025 Breakthrough Prizes Celebrate Global Achievements in Science and Mathematics

On April 5, 2025, the prestigious Breakthrough Prizes, often dubbed the “Oscars of Science,” were awarded to outstanding researchers in life sciences, mathematics, and fundamental physics. The highlight of this year’s event was the recognition of 13,508 physicists from four CERN collaborations—ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb—for their groundbreaking work at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Their research on the Higgs boson deepens our understanding of how particles acquire mass and opens new doors in particle physics.

Founded in 2013 by visionaries like Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, and Yuri Milner, the Breakthrough Prizes aim to honour major scientific discoveries and inspire the next generation of researchers globally.

In the Life Sciences category, scientists were celebrated for developing weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, breakthroughs in Multiple Sclerosis research, and innovations in gene editing by David R Liu.

The Mathematics Prize went to Dennis Gaitsgory of the Max Planck Institute for his pivotal proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture—a unifying theory connecting geometry, calculus, and number theory.

Additionally, six New Horizons Prizes ($100,000 each) were awarded to early-career scientists, while the Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize ($50,000 each) honoured three promising women mathematicians.

These awards underscore the importance of scientific inquiry and collaboration in advancing human knowledge for the benefit of all.
