Amaravati, envisioned by N. Chandrababu Naidu, has been a long-standing dream for Andhra Pradesh since the state's bifurcation in 2014. Naidu, credited with transforming Hyderabad into a tech hub, aimed to replicate this success with Amaravati. Despite the foundation being laid in 2015, the project stalled due to political and financial challenges.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant Rs 15,000 crore allocation for Amaravati in the Union Budget 2024. This financial package aims to kickstart the development of Andhra Pradesh's new capital, addressing the state's need for a dedicated capital city.
Amaravati's master plan, designed by London-based Foster + Partners, envisions a sustainable city with a strong urban grid, green spaces, and modern transportation options. The city will feature 13 urban plazas, electric vehicles, water taxis, and dedicated cycle routes. Divided into nine zones, Amaravati aims to provide a balanced and inclusive urban environment.
The project had seen significant investment under Naidu's previous tenure, but political shifts and changes in government priorities led to delays. With the new financial support, the focus is on reviving the dream, enhancing infrastructure, and boosting real estate in the region. The central government's commitment also extends to other developmental projects in Andhra Pradesh, including industrial corridors and grants for backward regions.
