Rajasthan Hospital Denies Treatment to MLA’s Ailing Mother Amid RGHS Payment Row

In a troubling incident highlighting systemic gaps in public healthcare, Mahavir Cancer Hospital in Jaipur refused to provide treatment to Prem Kanwar, the mother of Sadulpur MLA Manoj Kumar Nyangli, citing pending dues under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS). The denial occurred on Tuesday and has sparked widespread concern over the scheme’s effectiveness and reach.

Prem Kanwar, who is battling cancer, had been receiving treatment at Mahavir Cancer Hospital for the past 8 to 10 months. However, upon her latest visit, the hospital declined further care, allegedly due to non-payment of government dues under both RGHS and the ‘Maa’ scheme.

Distressed by the incident, MLA Nyangli has written to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, urging immediate action. In his letter, the legislator expressed not just personal anguish but also concern for the hundreds of other patients depending on the same scheme. “Over 200 patients were waiting at the hospital that day, all of them uncertain about their ongoing treatment,” he wrote. “If this is how a legislator’s mother is treated, one can only imagine the ordeal faced by the common man.”

The hospital administration reportedly told the MLA that without government reimbursement, it was financially unfeasible to continue offering free or subsidized services to patients enrolled under the RGHS. As a result, the MLA had to take his mother back home without any medical assistance.

The RGHS was introduced to offer cashless treatment for government employees, pensioners, and their dependents. However, delays in claim settlement and administrative bottlenecks have often disrupted services. This incident has brought the issue into the spotlight once again.

Healthcare activists and opposition leaders have demanded that the state government clear pending dues immediately and conduct a thorough review of the RGHS to ensure timely access to medical care for all beneficiaries, regardless of status.
