Andhra Pradesh Battles Torrential Rains, Officials on High Alert

Andhra Pradesh's SPSR Nellore and Prakasam districts are grappling with the aftermath of heavy rainfall, which has tragically claimed a life and prompted urgent action from authorities. The relentless downpour has transformed tranquil streams into raging torrents, as evidenced by the unfortunate incident in Kavali division. Dampoori Mallikarjuna, a 45-year-old resident of Chamdala village, met his fate while attempting to cross the swollen Nerella stream on his motorcycle. The powerful currents proved too strong, sweeping away both man and machine.

Swift response from local officials, including the Jaladanki tahsildar and sub-inspector, led to the recovery of Mallikarjuna's body with the aid of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by flooded waterways during the monsoon season.

In a proactive move, Prakasam district officials have launched repair works on the damaged Chadalawada Ramanna Cheruvu bund, aiming to divert excess water and prevent potential flooding on the Ongole-Chirala highway. The collector, P. Rajababu, and joint-collector R. Gopal Krishna are leading these efforts, ensuring proper drainage towards the Gundlakamma stream.

The situation has prompted a series of high-level reviews and directives. Minister of Social Welfare Dr. Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, during a review at the Ongole collectorate, emphasized vigilance, sanitation, and public safety, particularly regarding overflowing streams. Additionally, Urban Development Minister Dr. Ponguru Narayana instructed municipal commissioners to ensure round-the-clock availability, address waterlogging, and maintain sanitation and drinking water standards.

As the districts brace for potential challenges, the swift and coordinated response from various government departments underscores their commitment to safeguarding lives and infrastructure. With control rooms and emergency teams in place, Andhra Pradesh is geared up to tackle the monsoon's might.
