With the Bihar Assembly elections looming later this year, the Nitish Kumar-led government has approved a significant increase in the salaries and allowances of state ministers. In a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, 27 key proposals were passed, including revisions in ministers’ compensation and mass recruitment drives across various departments—moves widely seen as part of a broader political strategy in the run-up to the polls.
Substantial Pay Hike for Ministers
The salary of state ministers and deputy ministers has been increased from ₹50,000 to ₹65,000 per month. The regional allowance has also been raised from ₹55,000 to ₹70,000. In addition, the daily allowance has been revised from ₹3,000 to ₹3,500, while the hospitality allowance for ministers has gone up from ₹24,000 to ₹29,500. Deputy ministers will now receive a hospitality allowance of ₹29,000, up from ₹23,500.
Travel allowances for official work have also seen a sharp hike—from ₹15 per kilometre to ₹25 per kilometre—marking a substantial increase in the overall benefits extended to political officeholders.
Massive Recruitment Drive Launched
In a parallel move aimed at wooing young voters and addressing employment concerns, the government announced recruitment for thousands of posts across multiple departments. Notably, the Agriculture Department will see the addition of 2,590 new positions, while the Prohibition Department will recruit for 48 posts.
In the Health Department, over 20,000 new posts have been sanctioned, reflecting the government's focus on healthcare infrastructure. The Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) will also recruit 35 Data Entry Operators. Additionally, 3,306 positions of Assistant Urdu Translators will be filled under the state Secretariat.
Political Activities Gain Momentum
As the election heat rises, political parties across the spectrum are ramping up their campaigns. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Bihar, holding strategic discussions with NDA allies. On the opposition side, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been making frequent visits, and both RJD and JDU have intensified their grassroots mobilization.
These developments indicate a politically charged atmosphere in Bihar, with the government aiming to balance governance, public sentiment, and electoral readiness.
