India Eyes Partial Trade Deal with US in 90 Days; Focuses on EU Ties and Curbing Chinese Imports

India is actively working toward finalising a partial bilateral trade agreement with the United States within the next 90 days, in response to the recent tariff developments triggered by US President Donald Trump's reciprocal trade policies. According to government sources, the aim is to wrap up negotiations before the end of the 90-day window that temporarily pauses the higher tariffs. This move is part of a broader three-pronged strategy to strengthen India’s global trade position while also shielding its domestic industries from potential disruptions caused by global trade volatility.

The proposed bilateral trade agreement with the US is expected to focus on essential and non-sensitive product categories. As part of the deal, India is considering lowering import duties on several items from the US, which could pave the way for Washington to grant New Delhi some form of permanent tariff relief. High-level talks have already been held between the US administration and Indian authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Prime Minister’s Office. The deal is being treated as a priority to maintain stability in India-US trade ties amid wider geopolitical uncertainties.

Simultaneously, India is pushing forward its trade negotiations with the European Union and the United Kingdom. These talks, which have already reached advanced stages, are aimed at reducing India’s overdependence on any single trade partner and mitigating the risks from escalating tensions with the US or China. Securing free trade agreements with both the EU and UK is seen as a strategic move to diversify market access and enhance India’s position in global supply chains.

The third area of focus is on protecting Indian industries from unfair trade practices, particularly the dumping of cheap goods by China. India is preparing to implement stricter quality controls through the enforcement of the Quality Control Order, which will ensure that imported goods meet national standards. Additionally, an inter-ministerial group has been established to monitor and act against such practices. This comprehensive strategy reflects India’s intent to maintain a balanced trade approach—seeking new opportunities while protecting its economic sovereignty.
