Modest Gains in Employment Trends: Insights from the Latest PLFS Report

The latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), covering July 2023 to June 2024, highlights modest improvements in India’s labour market, particularly in urban areas. Conducted by the National Statistics Office, the PLFS provides key employment indicators including Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and Unemployment Rate (UR), based on a large and representative sample of over 100,000 households across rural and urban India.

In urban regions, male LFPR increased from 74.3% to 75.6%, while female LFPR edged up slightly from 25.5% to 25.8%. Nationally, LFPR rose from 50.3% to 51.0%, but remained stable at 56.2% overall. The WPR also showed slight gains—urban WPR rose from 47.0% to 47.6%, while the national figure increased marginally from 53.4% to 53.5%.

The unemployment rate dropped slightly nationwide from 5.0% to 4.9%, with rural unemployment improving from 4.3% to 4.2%. Urban unemployment remained steady at 6.7%, although urban female unemployment decreased notably from 8.9% to 8.2%.

One significant trend was the reduction in unpaid helpers among rural women—from 19.9% to 18.1%—indicating a possible shift towards more formal employment.

These findings underscore gradual but steady improvements in India’s employment landscape, particularly reflecting urban growth and evolving roles in rural economies.
