Elderly Woman Loses Rs 1.5 Crore in Sophisticated Digital Arrest Scam

In a shocking incident, a 73-year-old woman from Hyderabad became the victim of a sophisticated scam, losing a staggering Rs 1.5 crore to cybercriminals. The fraudsters, posing as police officers, accused her of heinous crimes and manipulated her into transferring a significant sum of money.

The woman's peaceful life in Bansilalpet took a terrifying turn on October 22 when she received a phone call from a self-proclaimed officer, Akash Chaudhary, supposedly from the Gandhinagar Police Station in Bengaluru. Chaudhary claimed that her Aadhaar card had been linked to the illegal transportation and murder of a shocking 187 children. The caller's allegations were not only distressing but also carried a sense of urgency as he warned of an imminent police arrest.

The scam escalated quickly as the victim was soon contacted via WhatsApp video call by another individual dressed in a police uniform. This impersonator provided fabricated evidence, including photographs and fake CBI arrest warrants, to support the false charges of women trafficking and money laundering. The scammers even claimed that Rs 3 crore had been deposited into her account, with Rs 30 lakh being illegal commissions. Under this intense psychological pressure, the woman transferred the money, fearing the consequences of the so-called 'digital arrest'.

The fraud was finally exposed when the victim's daughter noticed substantial withdrawals from their joint account. The family's quick intervention led to the involvement of the Cyber Crime Police, who registered a case and initiated an investigation. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals and the need for public awareness and vigilance.
