In a dramatic turn of events, Hyderabad's South-East Zone DCP S Chaitanya Kumar found himself in a tense situation on Saturday evening, where his quick thinking and swift action prevented a potential tragedy. The incident, which unfolded near Victory Playground in Chaderghat, began when the DCP noticed two men attempting to snatch a mobile phone.
DCP Chaitanya, accompanied by his gunman, sprang into action, pursuing the suspects. As they closed in, one of the thieves brandished a knife, attacking the DCP and his companion. In the ensuing scuffle, the officer fired three rounds in self-defence, injuring one suspect, later identified as Omar, a known criminal with a long history of theft and snatching offences.
Police Commissioner CV Sajjanar, who visited the injured DCP at a private hospital, confirmed the sequence of events. He stated, "The DCP's response was justified, as the accused posed a significant threat with a deadly weapon." Omar's criminal record includes 25 pending cases and two bookings under the Preventive Detention Act. Despite serving time in Chanchalguda Jail, he continued his illicit activities, even earning the label of a 'rowdy-sheeter' at Kalapathar Police Station.
The police have launched an investigation, forming teams to trace the second suspect and delve deeper into Omar's criminal past. The injured suspect remains under police custody at the hospital, receiving treatment for his bullet wounds. This incident highlights the bravery and quick reflexes of Hyderabad's police force, ensuring public safety in the face of dangerous criminals.
