Dubai Airport tops global rankings as busiest international hub in 2024

Dubai International Airport has once again claimed the title of the world’s busiest international airport in 2024, according to data released by Airports Council International (ACI). The airport served 92.3 million passengers during the year, reflecting a 6.1 percent rise from 2023. As the central hub for Emirates Airlines, Dubai continues to play a significant role in global air connectivity, especially between Asia, Europe, and Africa. Its consistent performance has helped it maintain its top spot for international traffic for several years.

Following Dubai, London’s Heathrow Airport ranked second in terms of international passenger volume, while Seoul’s Incheon Airport secured third place. Singapore Changi and Amsterdam Schiphol completed the top five, further demonstrating the dominance of Asian and European airports in global international travel. The resurgence of these major hubs indicates a strong recovery of the aviation sector post-pandemic.

Global air travel in 2024 saw remarkable growth, with the number of passengers rising by 9 percent to reach approximately 9.5 billion. This marked a return to and even surpassing of pre-COVID-19 levels by 3.8 percent. ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci emphasized the importance of these airports as crucial centers of global commerce and connectivity, noting the resilience of the aviation industry despite recent challenges.

While international travel flourished, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport retained its position as the busiest airport in the world overall when including domestic travel, handling 108.1 million passengers. Dubai and Dallas-Fort Worth followed closely behind. In terms of air cargo, Hong Kong International Airport led the world by processing 4.9 million metric tonnes, while Shanghai climbed to second and Memphis, Tennessee, dropped to third.

In addition to its passenger volume achievements, Singapore Changi Airport was awarded the title of the World’s Best Airport for the 13th time by Skytrax. The airport continues to impress with its world-class facilities and customer service. Furthermore, four Indian airports secured spots in the Skytrax Top 100 list, showcasing the rising quality and prominence of Indian aviation infrastructure on the global stage.
