As Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, India is bracing for a powerful storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of alerts, with 23 out of 26 districts in Andhra Pradesh under red and orange alerts for October 27th and 28th. This storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, with maximum wind speeds reaching 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
The IMD's latest statement indicates that the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph. It is forecast to further strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours. By October 28th, it is likely to become a severe cyclonic storm, crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada.
In preparation, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) has convened, chaired by Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan. The Chief Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, along with the Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha, have apprised the committee of their readiness. The IMD has also issued red and orange alerts for several districts in Odisha, where heavy rainfall is expected.
The impending cyclone has prompted a series of measures across the affected states. Andhra Pradesh's Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reviewed preparedness with various departments, emphasizing public safety. The state has appointed Special Officers to oversee relief operations, ensuring effective rescue and rehabilitation. Similarly, Odisha, known for its vulnerability to natural disasters, has activated its disaster readiness model, with local administrations making arrangements for relief centres and essential supplies.
