Drunk Driving Epidemic: Hyderabad's Alarming Road Safety Crisis

In a staggering display of disregard for road safety, Hyderabad and its neighboring commissionerates have become the epicenter of a drunk driving epidemic, with nearly 55,000 cases reported in just ten months. This shocking statistic underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and public awareness to combat the deadly consequences of intoxicated driving.

The recent Kurnool bus accident, which took the lives of 19 individuals, serves as a grim reminder of the potential fallout from such reckless behavior. The accident was allegedly triggered by a drunk biker who lost control, causing a chain reaction that led to the bus collision. This incident is just one of many where drunk driving has resulted in tragic fatalities.

Hyderabad's commissionerate alone accounted for a substantial 39,370 cases, with a total fine amount of over Rs 8.2 crore. Rachakonda police also registered a significant number of violations, with 15,390 cases. What's more concerning is that many of these offenders are repeat violators, undeterred by previous penalties. The Cyberabad Traffic Wing has responded with stringent measures, seizing vehicles and initiating the process of canceling driving licenses for habitual offenders.

To address this crisis, authorities are intensifying awareness campaigns. The Cyberabad and Hyderabad traffic police have collectively conducted over 2,200 campaigns, targeting educational institutions and workplaces to educate citizens about the dangers of drunk driving. These efforts aim to foster a culture of responsible driving and deter potential offenders. With the festive season approaching, when such incidents tend to spike, the authorities are gearing up for more stringent enforcement and awareness drives.
