In a city renowned for its vibrant fitness culture, a disturbing trend has emerged, casting a shadow over Hyderabad's health-conscious image. The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has uncovered a clandestine network of steroid abuse, implicating several gyms and fitness centres. This revelation raises urgent questions about the potential dangers lurking within the city's workout spaces.
The DCA's recent raids on 20 gyms across Hyderabad's bustling neighbourhoods, including Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, and Banjara Hills, have exposed a worrying practice. These establishments were allegedly involved in the illegal procurement and sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants, such as the mephentermine injection, to unsuspecting gym enthusiasts. The DCA's swift action serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with the misuse of prescription medications.
Long-term steroid abuse can lead to severe health complications, including infertility, kidney failure, and psychiatric issues. The DCA also warned against the misuse of Mephentermine Sulphate Injection, a powerful cardiac stimulant intended for specific medical conditions. This injection, when used without medical supervision, can have dangerous consequences, as it is designed to treat low blood pressure during spinal anaesthesia. The administration emphasised that only qualified doctors should prescribe and administer such medications.
In response to these alarming findings, the DCA has issued a stern warning to medical shops, reminding them of their legal obligations. All retailers and wholesalers are mandated to sell these controlled substances only against valid prescriptions from registered medical practitioners. The administration has vowed to take stringent action against any violations, including licence cancellations and prosecutions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. This decisive move underscores the DCA's commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that Hyderabad's fitness industry operates within the boundaries of the law.
