Namami Gange Mission 2.0 (NGM 2.0) is the government’s continued commitment to cleaning and rejuvenating the River Ganga, extending the original 2014 initiative until March 2026. Spearheaded by the National Mission for Clean Ganga under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, NGM 2.0 is entirely funded by the central government.
The mission focuses on sewage treatment, riverfront development, afforestation, surface cleaning, and biodiversity conservation. By February 2024, it had launched 457 projects, completing 280, with oversight from 139 District Ganga Committees to ensure community-aligned implementation.
In FY 2024–25, key achievements include the commissioning of seven major sewage treatment plants (STPs) across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi. These projects have significantly increased the sewage treatment capacity to 3722 MLD. Notable installations include a 47.70 MLD STP in Farrukhabad, a 33 MLD plant in Ayodhya, and Asia’s largest STP in Delhi with a capacity of 564 MLD, built for ₹666 crore using advanced A2O technology.
The total spending for completed projects in FY 2024–25 reached ₹3,184 crore, underlining the mission’s serious investment in environmental restoration. As these projects come online, they are expected to dramatically improve water quality, enhance urban sanitation, and bring long-term ecological benefits to India’s vital rivers.
