In a shocking revelation, a Hyderabad resident fell victim to a sophisticated online scam, losing a staggering Rs 10.21 lakh. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital world, where fraudsters exploit trust and emotions for financial gain.
The story began with a seemingly innocent Facebook friendship between a 42-year-old man from Langar Houz and a woman claiming to be Sai Preethi, a native of Vizag living in the UK. As their online chats progressed, what started as a casual connection took a dark turn. The woman, a skilled manipulator, gained the man's trust and then introduced him to a fraudulent investment scheme.
The scam unfolded as the victim, lured by the promise of high returns, transferred Rs 50,000 initially. The scammer's tactics were meticulous; they displayed fake profits in a trading app, encouraging further investment. Over a month, the man made multiple transfers, totaling Rs 10.21 lakh, to various UPI IDs and bank accounts, all under the illusion of growing wealth. However, when he attempted to withdraw his earnings, the scam became apparent. The transaction failed, and the fraudster demanded more money, only to disappear without a trace, leaving the victim emotionally shattered and financially devastated.
Cyberabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and revealed that this scam is part of a larger network of criminals creating fake identities to trap unsuspecting victims. The police advisory urges citizens to be vigilant, avoid unknown investment links, and verify platforms to prevent falling prey to such scams. This incident underscores the need for public awareness and caution in the digital realm, where fraudsters are constantly evolving their tactics.
