As Cyclone Montha looms, the city of Nellore is on high alert, with the Nellore Municipal Corporation taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents. In a recent media briefing, Commissioner Y.O. Nandan revealed a comprehensive plan to tackle the impending storm's challenges.
The Commissioner's strategy involves a meticulous division of the city into manageable sectors, with dedicated teams assigned to each. These teams, comprising officials from various departments, are a formidable force ready to address any issues. With one team for every four wards, the city is prepared for swift action. Each team includes experts from engineering, sanitation, revenue, and town planning, ensuring a holistic approach to flood management. Additionally, ten support staff members per team guarantee a robust response to any emergency.
The Nellore Municipal Corporation has also established 14 flood relief and rehabilitation centres in municipal schools, demonstrating its commitment to resident safety. These centres, equipped with essential facilities, stand ready to accommodate those in need. The Commissioner's assurance that people will be safely shifted reflects a proactive approach to disaster management. Furthermore, the involvement of ward secretariat staff in relief operations under administrative supervision ensures a coordinated response.
With desilting of major drains already completed, the city is better equipped to handle heavy rainfall and potential flooding. Commissioner Nandan's efforts, guided by Minister P. Narayana and MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, have significantly improved the city's resilience to water stagnation. As Nellore braces for Cyclone Montha, the command control centre and helpline at the municipal office will play a crucial role in assisting residents, offering a lifeline during this challenging time.
