In response to the rapidly evolving global trade environment, the Government of India has launched the Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk, a strategic initiative aimed at assisting exporters and importers in navigating international trade complexities. Announced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the helpdesk seeks to provide timely support in light of rising import pressures and new global tariff measures.
The helpdesk will address a wide range of trade-related concerns, including import surges, dumping, EXIM clearance hurdles, logistics bottlenecks, and regulatory compliance issues. It is especially relevant as the global trade landscape shifts, with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) actively monitoring tariff changes and supply chain disruptions.
A major trigger for this initiative is the United States’ recent tariff hike—10% on most partners and a sharp 125% on Chinese imports—escalating the US-China trade tensions. These developments could present new opportunities for Indian businesses as global manufacturers look to shift operations to countries with more favorable trade terms.
The helpdesk will also work in coordination with other government ministries and state agencies to ensure a unified and efficient response to stakeholder concerns. This initiative positions India as a proactive player in global trade and supports domestic businesses in strengthening their international competitiveness.
