In the inaugural T20I match of the India vs. Sri Lanka series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, India emerged victorious by 43 runs under the new head coach Gautam Gambhir. Captain Suryakumar Yadav's dynamic half-century was instrumental in setting a formidable total.
Opting to bat first, India posted a challenging 213/7 in 20 overs. Indian openers Shubman Gill (34 off 16) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21) gave a strong start with a 74-run partnership. Suryakumar Yadav's impressive 58 off 26 balls, coupled with Rishabh Pant's near half-century (49), ensured a commanding total. Matheesha Pathirana was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming 4/40.
In response, Sri Lanka began promisingly, with Pathum Nissanka (79 off 48) and Kusal Mendis (45) forging an 84-run opening stand. However, after Mendis' dismissal, Sri Lanka's innings faltered. Axar Patel’s critical wicket of Nissanka triggered a collapse, with Sri Lanka losing their last nine wickets for just 86 runs, eventually being bowled out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each, while Riyan Parag impressed with a 3/5 spell.
India's all-round performance, highlighted by Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership and pivotal contributions with the bat, set the tone for a convincing win. Sri Lanka's inability to build on their solid start proved costly as they failed to sustain momentum after Nissanka's departure.
Scores:
India leads the series 1-0, with the next T20I set to take place on Sunday.
