Karachi's Traffic Revolution: Automated Fines in Action

In a city where traffic rules were once more like guidelines, Karachi's streets are now under the watchful eye of a high-tech guardian. Within a mere six hours of its launch, the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) issued over 2,600 e-tickets, totaling a staggering Rs13 million in fines. This sudden enforcement has caught many off guard, marking a new era in Karachi's traffic management.

The TRACS, a state-of-the-art surveillance system, employs ANPR, ITS, and FR cameras to monitor the city's roads. DIG Traffic Police Peer Muhammad Shah explained that this technology, integrated under the Safe City Authority, is a game-changer. With 30% of the city already under its gaze, the system is poised to expand, eventually encompassing 12,000 advanced cameras.

However, this digital enforcer is selective in its targets. DIG Shah emphasized that e-challans are only issued on fully compliant roads, equipped with essential traffic infrastructure. This approach ensures fairness and provides an incentive for the city to improve its road markings and signage. The fines are not just a revenue generator; they serve as a deterrent. For instance, seatbelt violations accounted for the majority of fines, with 1,535 tickets issued, followed by 507 fines for riding bikes without helmets.

The system also targets heavy vehicles, with trackers now mandatory to monitor speed. DIG Shah's vision is clear: to revolutionize road safety and curb accidents caused by reckless driving. With the Karachi Traffic Management Company set to launch soon, the city's traffic management is on the cusp of a significant transformation, promising a safer and more disciplined future for Karachi's roads.
