Cyclone Montha Shuts Down Schools Across Southern States

As the festive season winds down, a new challenge emerges for schools in southern India. With Cyclone Montha, the first cyclone of the year, expected to make landfall near Kakinada on the Andhra Pradesh coast, several states are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings, predicting a rapid intensification of the storm into a severe cyclonic event.

Andhra Pradesh is at the forefront of these precautionary measures. Schools in various districts will remain shut from October 27 to 29, with heavy rain and cyclone alerts in place. The affected districts include East Godavari, Annamayya, Kadapa, NTR, Bapatla, Krishna, and Guntur, with additional districts expected to follow suit. Red alerts have been issued in Bapatla, YSR Kadapa, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, and Annamayya, prompting extended holidays.

Odisha's Gajapati district has also taken action, closing schools, anganwadi centres, and colleges until October 30. The state has designated eight southern districts as Red Zones, with all 30 districts on high alert. Tamil Nadu is also preparing, with temporary school closures in low-lying and coastal areas on October 28, and a decision for October 29 pending.

While these closures may disrupt academic schedules, the priority is undoubtedly the safety of the students and staff. The IMD's warnings and the rapid development of Cyclone Montha have prompted swift action from state authorities. As the storm approaches, the focus remains on ensuring the well-being of those in its path, with educational institutions leading the way in these precautionary measures.
