In a significant political development, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, aiming to rejuvenate the party’s grassroots presence ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. This visit comes shortly after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Ahmedabad, which passed a Gujarat-specific resolution—marking a strategic shift in Congress’s state-level approach.
On Tuesday, Gandhi will hold an orientation meeting in Ahmedabad with 42 AICC and 183 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) observers. These observers have been tasked with overseeing the appointment of presidents in 33 district units and 8 major city units across Gujarat. The move is part of a pilot project to strengthen the Congress's district-level organization, especially after the party’s dismal performance in the 2022 Assembly polls, where it was reduced from 17 to 12 seats following multiple defections to the BJP.
Gandhi is also set to address party workers in Modasa, Aravalli district on Wednesday, formally launching the pilot program. The Gujarat resolution emphasized ideological commitment to leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and proposed a caste census if Congress returns to power in the state.
Meanwhile in Karnataka, political tensions mount as a Special Court is set to deliver its verdict on the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) petition challenging the clean chit given to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the MUDA site allotment case. The ED has asserted its legal standing under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, while the Lokayukta’s counsel maintains that the petition is not legally valid.
Adding to the state’s political complexity, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar is scheduled to meet Congress legislators from the Vokkaliga community following concerns over the recently tabled caste survey. With dominant communities like Vokkaligas and Lingayats calling the survey flawed and exclusionary, Shivakumar has pledged to gather feedback to ensure fairness and inclusivity before the Cabinet’s special discussion on April 17.
