In a significant breakthrough, the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) has apprehended two more cybercriminals, adding to the growing list of online fraudsters brought to justice. This recent development highlights the department's unwavering commitment to combating cybercrime and safeguarding citizens from online deception.
The CID officials revealed that the accused, Guttikonda Sai Srinath and Chitthadithala Sumanth, employed sophisticated tactics to deceive unsuspecting individuals. Posing as Surendra, the TDP NRI Convener, and using the photograph of Minister for HRD Nara Lokesh as their WhatsApp profile picture, they lured victims with promises of medical assistance. This elaborate charade was part of a well-orchestrated scam that targeted vulnerable people.
The modus operandi involved contacting victims via WhatsApp using US-based phone numbers and providing fake bank transfer receipts. The fraudsters claimed that Rs. 10 lakh had been deposited into the victims' accounts, only to impersonate bank officials later and demand a 4% remittance fee to release the funds. This cunning scheme defrauded victims of Rs. 2.32 lakh.
Further investigations exposed a wider web of cyber fraud, implicating the arrested duo and the main accused, Konduri Rajesh, in nine separate cases across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Between 2022 and 2025, their activities resulted in a staggering loss of over Rs. 54 lakh for their victims. The CID's persistence paid off after 10 months of surveillance, leading to the arrest of Srinath and Sumanth in Hyderabad.
As the CID continues its efforts to combat cybercrime, the public is urged to exercise caution and vigilance when dealing with online requests for financial assistance. This case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of cyber threats and the importance of staying informed and alert.
