KRA's Marine Vigilance Recovers Millions in Lake Victoria Crackdown

---

In a significant boost to border security and revenue collection, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intensified its operations on Lake Victoria, intercepting illicit goods worth a staggering Ksh3.9 million. This crackdown, according to a KRA statement on October 30, highlights the Authority's commitment to tackling smuggling and ensuring fair trade practices.

The KRA Marine Unit's heightened surveillance has been a game-changer, targeting the rampant illegal trade along the lake borders. The unit's efforts have resulted in the recovery of Ksh1.6 million in revenue, primarily from small-scale traders attempting to bypass customs regulations. KRA Customs Chief Manager Dominic Kengara, speaking at the Kisumu Port, emphasized the success of their operations, stating that they have effectively curbed the influx of uncustomed goods, narcotics, and weapons. This crackdown has not only reduced illegal cross-border activities but also encouraged legitimate trade through proper channels.

The commonly smuggled items, including illicit liquor, timber, livestock, and sugar, have been a significant concern for authorities. However, KRA's vigilance has paid off, as evidenced by the impressive revenue collection at the Kisumu Port. In the 2024/2025 financial year, the port's revenue soared to Ksh107 million, a remarkable increase from the previous year's Ksh30 million. Sugar imports from Tanzania and Uganda have been a primary contributor, generating over Ksh170 million in duties and taxes between May and August 2025 alone. The port's expansion has facilitated the growth of exports, including petroleum, ceramic tiles, wheat, and fertilizer, further enhancing regional trade.

With the KRA's marine clearance operations, the pressure on land border posts like Busia and Malaba is reduced, demonstrating the strategic importance of Lake Victoria in Kenya's trade and security landscape. This successful crackdown sends a clear message about the KRA's determination to protect Kenya's borders and promote fair trade practices.
