Rajasthan's Cannabis Crackdown: Uncovering a Tribal Trade Network

In a massive operation, Rajasthan's Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have dealt a significant blow to the illegal drug trade, uprooting a vast ganja plantation and seizing a staggering 8,000 plants. This raid, conducted in the tribal areas of Udaipur, reveals a sophisticated network that has been operating under the radar for years.

The operation, led by IG ATS Vikas Kumar, uncovered a well-established cannabis cultivation and distribution network. The tribal regions, with their remote and often overlooked terrain, had become a strategic hub for drug traffickers. These traffickers have been supplying cannabis across western and southern Rajasthan, as well as reaching northern states like Gujarat and Punjab. The scale of the operation is evident in the over 50 bighas of land dedicated to cannabis cultivation, which, according to Kumar, takes three to four months to mature and can fetch high prices on the illegal market.

The ANTF's investigation, which began three months ago, initially pointed to Manipur, Telangana, and Odisha as potential sources. However, their covert operation, involving teams disguised as government officials, confirmed local cultivation. The task force's innovative strategy, including a disguised departure from Jaipur as devotees in a religious procession, caught the traffickers off guard, ensuring the operation's success.

With the cannabis supply chain disrupted, the ANTF and NCB now focus on the processing and distribution network. The question remains: was this operation a local consumption hub, or was the cannabis destined for hashish production elsewhere? The investigation continues, with the authorities determined to unravel the full extent of this illegal trade and protect the youth of Rajasthan and beyond from the scourge of drugs.
