Hyderabad's Nehru Outer Ring Road (ORR), a 158-kilometre expressway designed for seamless high-speed travel, is embarking on a transformative journey towards a zero-fatality corridor. This ambitious goal is the focus of a month-long public awareness campaign, "No Parking on ORR," launched by a coalition of concerned authorities.
The recent surge in accidents on the ORR, particularly those involving vehicles parked on shoulders and emergency lanes, has prompted this proactive initiative. Safety officials have identified illegal parking, especially by heavy trucks and lorries without proper hazard warnings, as a significant contributor to these avoidable collisions. The expressway, meant for uninterrupted travel at speeds up to 120 km/h, is now the centre of a collaborative effort to educate motorists about the inherent dangers of stopping or parking on this high-speed route.
The campaign, a joint venture by IRB Golconda Expressway Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Traffic Police, and Hyderabad Growth Corridor Ltd. (HGCL), aims to instil a culture of safe and responsible driving. "Many accidents stem from illegally parked vehicles," emphasised the HGCL chief general manager. "We want every motorist to understand the life-threatening consequences of even a brief stop on the ORR." This initiative will employ various strategies, including awareness drives, digital outreach, and interactive sessions with drivers and logistics operators, to ensure the message resonates across the board.
As the campaign unfolds, the ORR's journey towards becoming a safer, more efficient corridor will be closely watched. The success of this initiative could set a precedent for similar high-speed roads across the country, making it a pivotal moment in road safety advocacy.
