Hyderabad Cracks Down on Traffic Violators with Unpaid Fines

Hyderabad's roads are set for a significant safety upgrade as traffic police across the tri-commissionerates launch a stringent initiative to tackle the issue of unpaid traffic challans. With a focus on private travel bus operators and two-wheeler riders, the authorities aim to curb the rising trend of accumulated traffic violations. The catalyst for this operation is the recent Vemuri Kaveri bus accident in Kurnool, where the vehicle in question had an astounding Rs 40,000 in unpaid challans.

The traffic police are taking a proactive approach, announcing that vehicles with more than 10 pending challans will be seized without delay. This bold move is accompanied by a strategy to visit the residences of the vehicle owners, ensuring the collection of outstanding dues. The Madhapur traffic DCP, T. Sai Manohar, emphasised the need to collaborate with the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to categorise pending challan data by vehicle type, making it easier to identify persistent violators.

In a first for the Cyberabad traffic police, a dedicated 20-member team has been established to scrutinise pending challan data daily. Their mission is to track down vehicles, particularly private buses, with substantial unpaid fines. The team's efforts have already yielded results, as evidenced by the case of a four-wheeler traced to Bengaluru with over 40 pending challans amounting to Rs 35,000. The owner, a frequent traveller to Hyderabad for medical treatment, had repeatedly flouted traffic rules on one-way roads.

The coordinated effort between the traffic police and the RTA is set to intensify, with plans to create specialised data teams and implement new software for efficient challan categorisation. This comprehensive approach aims to improve road safety, ensuring that repeat offenders are held accountable for their actions. The public can expect increased scrutiny on the roads as Hyderabad's traffic authorities work towards a safer and more regulated transport environment.
