The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the 26th edition of its report, Women and Men in India 2024 – Selected Indicators and Data. This publication offers a comprehensive view of gender-related trends across sectors, highlighting strides made and challenges that remain in achieving gender equality.
In financial inclusion, women now own 39.2% of all bank accounts, with rural ownership reaching 42.2%. They also contribute to 39.7% of total bank deposits, signaling rising economic participation. Similarly, female stock market participation has surged, with DEMAT accounts held by women rising from 6.67 million in 2021 to 27.71 million in 2024.
Entrepreneurship among women has shown remarkable growth. Female-led proprietary establishments are increasing in manufacturing and services, while the number of startups with at least one woman director jumped from 1,943 in 2017 to 17,405 in 2024.
On the political front, female voter turnout reached 65.8% in 2024, outpacing men and indicating growing political engagement. In education, the Gender Parity Index remains strong at both primary and higher secondary levels, despite minor dips in the upper primary and elementary stages.
The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for those aged 15+ increased to 60.1% in 2023–24, reflecting improved female workforce inclusion.
This report underscores significant progress in gender equality, while also serving as a roadmap for policy reforms to bridge remaining gaps and empower women across all facets of society.
