Not Just Soil and Water – PM Modi to Gift Mega Boost for Amaravati This Time?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Amaravati on May 2, where he will officially launch the long-awaited redevelopment works for Andhra Pradesh’s capital city. Preparations are in full swing for what promises to be a landmark event, and expectations are running high — not just for another symbolic gesture, but for real, tangible support from the Centre this time.

Back in 2017, Modi laid the foundation stone for Amaravati with much fanfare, bringing soil from sacred sites and water from holy rivers. Despite the emotional symbolism, there was no financial package or concrete backing from the Centre. Even though the TDP was then part of the NDA, Amaravati’s development remained largely on paper.

But 2024 has rewritten the political playbook. This time, the BJP-led NDA has returned to power for a third consecutive term, but without a clear majority of its own. The government now relies heavily on key allies like TDP and JD(U). This shift has dramatically increased Andhra Pradesh’s bargaining power, and Amaravati is reaping the benefits.

According to government sources, the Centre has already greenlit major proposals for the capital city. These include:

  • Loan guarantees from the World Bank and HUDCO
  • Approval for a new railway line connecting Amaravati
  • Plans for a modern outer ring road
  • Upgraded national highway links

Moreover, it’s being reported that the Centre is now backing Amaravati with policy and financial muscle, offering unprecedented cooperation with CM Chandrababu Naidu. With the PM's upcoming visit, insiders believe that a massive central package for Amaravati’s infrastructure may finally be unveiled.

If this happens, Amaravati will no longer be just a symbol of aspiration—it will be a fully funded capital project with the Centre's full blessing. The visit could mark the beginning of Amaravati’s transformation into a global city, and possibly rewrite the political and developmental narrative of Andhra Pradesh for years to come.
