In a dramatic display of Andhra Pradesh's commitment to combating the illicit drug trade, a massive haul of narcotics, valued at over Rs 5.21 crore, went up in flames at the Jindal urban waste management Ltd dumping yard in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. This incineration, overseen by the state police, sent a clear message to drug smugglers and terrorists alike: Andhra Pradesh is taking a zero-tolerance approach to narcotics.
The event, attended by Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta, saw the destruction of a substantial cache of illegal substances, including 10,148 kg of cannabis, 19.3 litres of hashish oil, and one kilogram of opium. These drugs were linked to 533 cases, and the DGP emphasized that the operation was a significant step in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. The DGP's statement linking ganja smugglers to terrorists underscores the seriousness of the situation and the potential security implications of the drug trade.
The DGP revealed that Andhra Pradesh's cannabis production has been effectively curbed, forcing inter-state smugglers to source the drug from other regions. This strategic shift in supply has not deterred the police, who have made significant arrests and seizures. In the 533 NDPS Act cases, 1,435 accused were arrested, with a notable breakdown of 712 from Visakhapatnam, 332 from other Andhra Pradesh districts, and 391 from other states. The police also confiscated various vehicles used for drug transportation, including two-wheelers, cars, auto-rickshaws, and lorries.
The operation highlights the police's determination to disrupt the drug supply chain and target those who facilitate the trade. With petitions filed to interrogate accused persons in central prison, the authorities aim to gather crucial intelligence on the drug network's hierarchy and operations. This comprehensive approach aims to dismantle the drug trafficking infrastructure and send a powerful message of deterrence.
