Union Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the inauguration ceremony of Iran's reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Tuesday. The event, which underscored close ties between India and Iran, saw attendance from high-ranking officials from numerous countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey. European Union envoy Enrique Mora was also present.
Just hours after the ceremony, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a pre-dawn airstrike in Iran on Wednesday. Haniyeh had been present at the inauguration, sharing the stage with Nitin Gadkari and other international dignitaries. This event marked a significant escalation in regional tensions.
The assassination has sparked outrage in Iran, with Iran's supreme leader vowing revenge against Israel, whom they blame for the strike. The killing of Haniyeh, a key figure in the Palestinian militant group Hamas, follows Israel’s pledge to target Hamas leaders in retaliation for the group's attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and the capture of 250 hostages.
Nitin Gadkari's presence in Tehran, representing India, highlights ongoing bilateral cooperation, including the development of Chabahar Port. His message conveyed good wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Pezeshkian, emphasizing India's commitment to strengthening relations with Iran.
