In a significant move to support local farmers, the Nellore district administration has established an impressive 300 paddy procurement centres (PPCs) across the region. This proactive step aims to ensure farmers receive a fair deal for their hard-earned produce, particularly as the paddy harvesting season commences in the upcoming February third week.
According to District Agriculture Officer P Satyavani, Nellore's farmers have cultivated paddy across a vast four lakh hectares during this Rabi season. The officer expressed optimism, anticipating a substantial yield of 11 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, thanks to adequate water availability and various administrative initiatives. However, the challenge lies in ensuring farmers receive the minimum support price (MSP) for their crop.
Satyavani urged farmers to steer clear of middlemen, who often exploit them by offering low prices under the pretext of high moisture content in the paddy. She emphasized that the administration has established PPCs to guarantee farmers receive the MSP. The officer also noted that the PNR 15048 and KWM 1638 paddy varieties, widely cultivated this season, are in high demand in neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, attracting traders from these regions.
The administration's commitment to supporting farmers is evident in their pricing strategy, offering Rs 19,700 for 850 bags of paddy, considering a 17% moisture percentage. This initiative ensures farmers receive a fair price without being subjected to the potential exploitation by middlemen. With the harvesting season approaching, the district administration's efforts to provide a safety net for farmers' income are both timely and essential.
