In a significant development, the Election Commission has reported seizures of over Rs 100 crore in illegal campaign materials, including cash, drugs, and liquor, in Bihar and other states with upcoming assembly by-elections. This crackdown, a result of rigorous enforcement agency efforts, aims to curb illicit activities that often plague the democratic process.
As of November 3, the total value of seized inducements has reached a staggering Rs 108.19 crore. This includes a substantial Rs 9.62 crore in cash, Rs 42.14 crore worth of liquor, and drugs valued at Rs 24.61 crore. The haul also encompasses precious metals and various other freebies, collectively worth over Rs 26 crore. These figures highlight the extent of illegal practices employed during election campaigns, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
The two-phase assembly elections in Bihar, scheduled for November 6 and 11, have been a particular focus of these enforcement actions. Additionally, bypolls in eight constituencies across seven states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, and Rajasthan, are also under scrutiny. The Election Commission has deployed 824 flying squads in Bihar to address complaints promptly, ensuring a swift response to any reported violations.
In a statement, the Election Commission emphasized its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process, directing enforcement authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in combating the circulation of illegal inducements. This proactive approach is crucial in ensuring that the upcoming elections in Bihar and other states are conducted fairly and transparently, upholding the principles of democracy and good governance.
