In a significant operation, the Mangaluru City Crime Branch (CCB) police have made a substantial dent in the city's drug trade, seizing a total of 24.75 grams of the banned narcotic MDMA and arresting two individuals allegedly involved in its distribution. This crackdown, which took place over two days, sheds light on the growing concern of drug peddling in the region.
The first arrest occurred on November 4, when the CCB received a tip-off about drug activity near the bustling Mangaluru port and dock area. They intercepted an auto-rickshaw driven by Abdul Salam, a 39-year-old resident of SH Nagar. The subsequent search revealed a substantial amount of MDMA, valued at Rs 1,20,000, along with drug paraphernalia and equipment. This seizure highlights the alarming trend of drug trafficking in public spaces and the potential risks to the city's youth.
The CCB's swift action continued on November 6, leading to the arrest of Mohammad Naseer, alias Shakir, a 28-year-old from Jaradagudde House in the Boliyaru area. Naseer was allegedly supplying MDMA to college students and locals, endangering the well-being of the community. The police recovered MDMA worth Rs 1,20,000 and other incriminating items from his possession.
With these arrests, the CCB has sent a strong message to drug peddlers operating in Mangaluru. However, the investigation is far from over. Police sources indicate that the drug supply network may be more extensive, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved. The challenge now lies in tracing the source of these narcotics and dismantling the entire operation, which may require inter-state cooperation and a comprehensive strategy.
