IISR Surya: A Game-Changer in Turmeric Cultivation

The Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) has introduced a new turmeric variety, IISR Surya, tailored to meet the needs of the masala and powdering industry. With its light-coloured rhizome and high yield potential, this variety is poised to transform turmeric production in India and cater to growing global demand.

Traditionally, turmeric varieties cultivated in India have been yellowish, but the market is now shifting towards lighter-coloured turmeric, especially in countries like Japan and parts of Europe. This demand has been difficult to meet due to limited supply and inconsistent quality. IISR Surya directly addresses this gap with a high-yielding, visually appealing alternative.

Boasting a 20–30% higher yield than traditional local varieties, IISR Surya can produce up to 41 tonnes per hectare under optimal conditions. Its pleasant aroma and suitability for powdering make it especially attractive for the spice processing industry.

Recognising its potential, the All India Coordinated Research Project on Spices (AICRPS) has recommended IISR Surya for cultivation in states such as Kerala and Telangana. This move is expected to enhance local production and reduce dependency on blending practices that compromise quality.

For farmers, IISR Surya presents a profitable and sustainable alternative. Its higher yields and market preference offer opportunities to improve incomes while contributing to the growth of India’s spice export economy.
