In a significant development, 12 residents of Telangana are returning home after being rescued from a cyber scam hub in Myanmar's Myawaddy region, marking a crucial step in India's ongoing efforts to repatriate citizens entangled in Southeast Asia's dark web of cybercrime. This group is part of the 270 Indians who recently escaped the clutches of online fraud operations, thanks to a military aircraft that brought them back to India from Thailand.
The journey home began after a daring escape from Myanmar's KK Park cybercrime hub, a notorious compound where hundreds of foreigners, including Indians, were coerced into online scam activities under the guise of lucrative IT jobs. The recent military crackdown on this hub prompted a mass exodus, with many fleeing to Thailand, where Indian authorities stepped in to facilitate their return.
Officials from the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) are actively coordinating the homecoming, arranging travel from Delhi, where the group is currently housed at the Telangana Bhavan. Three Telangana police officials have been dispatched to Delhi to provide essential support, ensuring the safe return of these individuals to Hyderabad.
This rescue operation is part of a broader initiative led by the Indian government, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spearheading efforts to rescue Indian citizens from similar situations in Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries. The Indian Embassy in Myanmar has been instrumental in these efforts, having repatriated over 1,600 nationals since July 2022, with more operations planned for those still stranded. The Embassy's helpline (+95-95419602) remains active, offering a lifeline to those in need.
As these 12 Telangana residents return home, the authorities' focus will shift to understanding their involvement in the cyber operations and raising awareness about the dangers of fraudulent overseas job offers.
