The Cyberabad traffic police have launched a vigorous campaign against drunk driving, resulting in a significant number of arrests over a single weekend. From November 7 to 8, the authorities booked 529 individuals for driving under the influence, sending a strong message about the consequences of this dangerous behavior.

The crackdown reveals a concerning trend among young and middle-aged motorists, who constituted the majority of those arrested. The data is startling: 213 drivers were aged between 21 and 30, 179 between 31 and 40, and 91 between 41 and 50. This breakdown underscores the need for targeted awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement to curb drunk driving, especially among these age groups.

All the offenders are now facing legal repercussions, as the Cyberabad traffic police have emphasized the severity of drunk driving. They have warned that any intoxicated driver involved in a fatal accident will be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a substantial fine. This zero-tolerance approach aims to deter potential offenders and ensure road safety.

The recent operation builds on the previous week's efforts, where 357 drunk driving cases were resolved in court. The judiciary's response was swift, with 307 offenders fined, 27 ordered to pay fines and perform social service, and 23 sentenced to imprisonment in addition to fines. This consistent enforcement sends a clear signal that drunk driving will not be tolerated, and those who engage in it will face the full force of the law.
