In a significant development in Hyderabad's battle against drug trafficking, the city's Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has successfully apprehended and deported a Nigerian national who had been living in India illegally for over a decade. This operation highlights the growing challenge of foreign nationals overstaying their visas and becoming entangled in local criminal activities.
The accused, Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro, aged 43, originally from Imo State, Nigeria, entered India in 2012 on a business visa. However, he soon became an illegal resident, using aliases like Hopy Cup and Jeksa to evade authorities while frequently traveling between Bengaluru and Hyderabad. This cat-and-mouse game ended when H-NEW, acting on intelligence, caught Okoro within the jurisdiction of the Asif Nagar Police Station. Although no drugs were found during the arrest, Okoro's suspected involvement in drug smuggling activities, particularly targeting students and young professionals, was a cause for concern.
The swift action by H-NEW and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) resulted in Okoro's deportation back to Nigeria after verifying his identity and securing the necessary travel documents. This case underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement in addressing the complex issue of foreign nationals overstaying visas and engaging in criminal activities. Since its formation, H-NEW has deported 22 foreign nationals, primarily in 2024, for similar reasons, demonstrating their commitment to tackling this issue head-on.
With the increasing complexity of drug networks, authorities are urging citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The public's cooperation is vital in this ongoing battle, especially in protecting the youth from the dangers of substance abuse. As the authorities continue to crack down on these illegal activities, the city of Hyderabad takes another step towards ensuring a safer and more secure environment for its residents.
