Hyderabad's streets are witnessing a crackdown on drunk driving as the city's traffic police take a firm stance against this dangerous practice. In a recent surge of enforcement, the Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionerates have collectively booked an alarming 1,642 drunk driving offenders, with 65 individuals facing imprisonment.

The Hyderabad traffic police, in particular, have been relentless in their efforts, registering 1,113 cases in just one week, from November 1st to 7th. Among the offenders, two-wheeler riders dominated the statistics, with 918 individuals, followed by 87 three-wheelers, 107 car drivers, and even a heavy-vehicle driver. The data reveals a concerning trend, with the majority of offenders, a staggering 425, belonging to the 21-30 age group, indicating a need for targeted awareness campaigns.

The Cyberabad police also joined forces, apprehending 529 individuals over the weekend. The BAC levels of these offenders were alarmingly high, with 69 individuals registering levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. This strict enforcement sends a clear message that drunk driving will not be tolerated, and the consequences are severe.

In the past week, the courts have actively addressed these cases, disposing of 357 drunk driving cases. The penalties ranged from fines to imprisonment, with 307 individuals fined and 23 sentenced to jail. Additionally, 27 offenders were assigned social service, emphasizing the importance of community responsibility. The police have urged citizens to refrain from drunk driving, warning that causing accidents under the influence can lead to charges of culpable homicide, carrying a sentence of up to 10 years in jail. This comprehensive approach aims to deter potential offenders and ensure safer roads for all.
