STPI's Expansion Strategy

The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has been pivotal in transforming India’s IT landscape. Over the past three decades, India’s IT/ITeS sector has witnessed substantial growth, with revenues now hitting $250 billion. STPI, with its 65 centres across the country, has been instrumental in supporting this evolution. According to Arvind Kumar, Director General of STPI, “Out of our 65 centres, 57 are located in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.” This strategy aims to decentralize the IT industry, promote regional growth, and foster a more inclusive economic landscape.

Promoting Regional Growth

The expansion to tier-2 and tier-3 cities is not merely about increasing the number of centres but also about creating a supportive ecosystem in regions previously less engaged by the IT industry. Kumar highlighted that the focus is on decentralizing operations to drive regional development. This approach includes implementing initiatives like the India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS), which has successfully created job opportunities and facilitated the migration of BPOs to these regions.

Supporting Startups and Innovation

STPI's efforts extend beyond traditional IT services to include significant support for the startup ecosystem. With 24 domain-specific Centres for Entrepreneurship (CoEs), STPI has nurtured over 1,000 tech startups in areas such as AI, blockchain, and health tech. The LEAP AHEAD programme, which offers intensive mentorship, has been particularly successful, with 90 startups receiving mentorship and 25 participating in the TiE-Silicon Valley programme, securing crucial funding.

Modernizing Incubation and Training

In response to evolving needs, STPI is modernizing its incubation space allocation process through a new online booking portal. This initiative simplifies the process for startups needing space across different centres. Additionally, STPI is addressing the future of technology by collaborating with partners like the Sabudh Foundation and Yotta Data Services. These partnerships focus on technology training and developing India’s sovereign cloud, “Ananta,” which offers advanced services essential for startups and small IT industries.
