In a significant operation, Hyderabad Customs officials at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) have intercepted a series of smuggling attempts, seizing contraband with a combined worth of Rs 4.71 crore. This haul, consisting of hydroponic weed and high-end electronic gadgets, sheds light on the evolving tactics of illicit traders.

The first case involved a passenger arriving from Bangkok, whose baggage concealed a substantial amount of hydroponic weed, a potent form of cannabis. The 4.3 kilograms of this controlled substance, grown without soil using nutrient-rich water, is estimated to be valued at a staggering 4 crore in the illegal market. This discovery highlights the growing trend of smuggling hydroponic weed into India from Southeast Asian countries.

Simultaneously, the Customs team, aided by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), uncovered a trove of electronic goods from Abu Dhabi-bound passengers. The seized items included the latest models of smartphones, smartwatches, drones, gaming consoles, and foldable phones, collectively valued at 71.7 lakh. This incident underscores the demand for high-end electronics in the grey market.

"Our enhanced surveillance and intelligence-led approach at RGIA has proven effective in thwarting smuggling attempts," a Customs official stated. The airport has witnessed a surge in narcotics and high-value electronic smuggling cases over the past year, prompting authorities to intensify their efforts. Both incidents are now under investigation, with officials invoking the Customs Act, 1962, and relevant sections of the NDPS Act to ensure a comprehensive probe.

This operation underscores the ongoing battle against illicit trade and the need for heightened vigilance at international airports.
