In a significant move to combat the growing addiction crisis, Telangana's health department is taking decisive action by expanding the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Erragadda, Hyderabad. This expansion aims to address the alarming rise in substance abuse cases, particularly among adolescents and young adults, by providing much-needed resources and support.
The current Hyderabad centre, the only government-run de-addiction facility in Telangana, is overwhelmed with a monthly influx of hundreds of substance abuse cases, despite having just 20 beds. Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, the IMH expansion will significantly increase its capacity to 60 beds, accompanied by dedicated counselling services and essential diagnostic support. This expansion is a critical step towards addressing the gap in addiction treatment services, as highlighted by Dr. Anita Rayirala, superintendent of IMH.
The new regional de-addiction centres in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Mahabubabad, and Khammam will operate under a hub-and-spoke model, each accommodating 25 to 30 beds. This decentralized approach aims to improve accessibility for those in need across the state. Common addictions among young people include alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and even psychoactive drugs like cocaine, LSD, and opioids. The expanded IMH will offer a comprehensive range of services, including detoxification, de-addiction, rehabilitation, and group counselling, supported by an increased number of psychologists and social workers.
Dr. A Narendra Kumar, Director of Medical Education, emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach, stating that medical treatment alone is insufficient. The expanded centre will prioritize continuous counselling and accurate diagnostic confirmation through enhanced laboratory facilities, ensuring comprehensive care for those struggling with addiction. This development underscores the state's commitment to addressing the addiction crisis and improving the well-being of its residents.
