Elderly Doctor's Digital Nightmare: Telangana's Swift Cyber Rescue

In a chilling reminder of the dark side of technology, an 80-year-old doctor in Telangana found himself entangled in a web of digital deceit, orchestrated by cunning cyber fraudsters. The incident, which unfolded over three days, highlights the growing sophistication of online scams and the urgent need for public awareness and swift law enforcement action.

Dr. Buddharaju Subbaraju, a respected medical practitioner at Neela Nursing Home in Bhadrachalam, became the target of a devious scheme when he received a series of WhatsApp video calls on November 20. The callers, masquerading as CBI officers, claimed that a bank account opened in his name in Mumbai was implicated in over a hundred criminal cases. In a calculated move, they ordered the doctor, his daughter-in-law, and minor granddaughter to remain connected via hourly video calls, supposedly under CBI surveillance.

As the family's ordeal continued, the scammers coerced the doctor into sharing sensitive banking information and even breaking a fixed deposit, anticipating a large transfer. The situation escalated when Dr. Subbaraju's absence from his clinic raised suspicions, prompting an alert hospital assistant to contact the District Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (D4C) on the night of November 23. The timely intervention of DSP Ashok Babu and Inspector Jitender was crucial, as they rushed to the doctor's residence, putting an end to the scam and providing much-needed counsel to the distressed victims.

"No police, CBI, or government agency conducts digital arrests or WhatsApp inquiries," emphasized TGCSB Director Shikha Goel. The authorities are now on the trail of the perpetrators, employing digital forensics to trace IP addresses and device identifiers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of public vigilance and the relentless efforts of cybercrime units in safeguarding citizens from the ever-evolving threats lurking in the digital realm.
