ICRC Increases Budget to Address Global Humanitarian Needs Amid Rising Crises

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has significantly expanded its budget to tackle the growing humanitarian crises worldwide. For 2015, the ICRC has set an unprecedented global budget of 1.6 billion Swiss francs (about 1.68 billion US dollars), reflecting the escalating needs due to armed conflicts and other emergencies. This marks a notable increase of 24.9% from the previous year’s appeal.

Key regions receiving increased funding include the Philippines, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, which have seen substantial rises in appeal amounts due to ongoing or intensifying conflicts. Specifically, Bangladesh’s appeal has nearly doubled, reflecting heightened needs in the region. In contrast, the appeal for Afghanistan has decreased despite ongoing violence, due to shifting priorities and security challenges.

In South Asia, the ICRC's objectives for 2015 include monitoring detainees in Jammu and Kashmir, supporting the Indian Red Cross Society, and enhancing physical rehabilitation services. In Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the focus will be on maintaining dialogue with local authorities and improving support for conflict-affected communities.

The ICRC relies on voluntary contributions from various sources to fund its operations. The increased budget underscores the global urgency to address humanitarian needs and ensure effective responses in crisis-stricken areas.
